25 WAYS TO HOMEMADE BEAUTY

Before the turn of the last century, many cosmetics and skin treatments were either homemade or compounded by a pharmacist. Many individuals used herbs, fruits, and vegetables found in their gardens to treat skin ailments. Today, we can make many of these natural remedies ourselves with supplies available at our local health-food stores, or via mail order or even the Internet. If you make your own skin care products, you will definitely have complete control over how natural the final product actually is. Even with natural ingredients, you must be aware of their actions and use them correctly. So go ahead and beautify yourself.

1. Removing Redness from Blemishes

Take a potato and slice off a piece. Hold it on your skin for about 10 minutes and the redness almost seems to disappear. Use this method whenever you get a cutor blemish that is hard to cover up with foundation.

2. Rose Skin Toner

3½ cups witch hazel
½ cup dried rose petals
5 sprigs rosemary

Mix ingredients together, making sure eveything is blended well. Strain. Splash on your face after cleaning skin.

3. Soft Skin Lotion

1 cup dried chamomile
4 tablespoons honey
1 cup milk
8 teaspoons wheat germ

Steep chamomile in milk for a few hours. Strain, keeping liquid. Add honey and wheat germ to liquid mixture. Blend well. Place in a bottle. Refrigerate any used portions. Keeps up to a week.

4. Gentle Facial Cleanser
½ cup oatmeal or cornmeal

For a gentle facial cleanser, mix ingredients, then smooth over entire face, avoiding eye area.

5. Apple Zinger Facial Mask (for oily skin that is acne-prone)

15. Deep Conditioner for Beautiful Hair
1 small jar of real mayonnaise
½ of an avocado

Put together in a medium bowl and squish together with your hands until it's a minty green color. Smooth into hair all the way to the tips. Put on a shower cap or wrap your head with plastic wrap; leave on for 20 minutes. For deeper conditioning, put a hot, damp towel around your head over the plastic wrap. And if you have really long hair and only need deep conditioning at the ends, cut the ingredients in half and apply only to the ends, just wrapping them.

25. Fruit Cream

When the first alpha-hydroxy acid creams started coming out, I realized that they were based on simple formulas of lactic acid and fruit acid.

1 tablespoon powdered milk
1 tablespoon puréed apples or pears

Mix together to form a paste; if too sloppy, just add more powdered milk and then apply to skin before bed (put towel on pillow). In the morning you can rinse it off and behold—gorgeous skin for pennies!
